The Mayo Clinic, one of the highest-acclaimed hospitals in the United States, was founded in Rochester, Minnesota, and expanded to Arizona in 1987.
With locations in Phoenix and Scottsdale, the Mayo Clinic Arizona is consistently ranked as the #1 hospital in Arizona by U.S. News & World Report, including the most recent 2022 rankings.
With such a reputation for top-notch care, it is no wonder that we receive many inquiries from Arizona residents wondering which health insurance plans are accepted by the Mayo Clinic.
None of the individual/family health insurance plans currently available in Arizona through the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) are accepted at the Mayo Clinic. That includes the 2022 and 2023 Obamacare Marketplace plans available from Banner/Aetna, Ambetter, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Bright Health, Cigna, Medica, Oscar, and United Healthcare. (Although the BCBS AZ PPO plans ARE accepted at the Mayo Clinic’s Floria and Minnesota locations.)
Fortunately, there are still plans available to Arizona residents that are accepted by Mayo Clinic. One option includes plans from United Healthcare/Golden Rule that use the UHC Choice Plus network. Another option, from National General, uses Aetna’s Open Choice PPO network. Both networks include the Mayo Clinic. These plans often cost less than 50% of the cost of an Obamacare plan if you don’t qualify for a premium tax credit. They are a great option for people who are generally healthy and want access to a larger network than Obamacare plans currently provide.
Pre-Existing Conditions and Individual Coverage at Mayo Clinic Arizona
Please note: these plans generally do not cover pre-existing conditions. If you are already being treated for a health condition, these plans will not cover you for that condition at the Mayo Clinic. Also, these plans will decline your application if you have been treated for certain conditions in the past 5 years, including cancer, stroke, emphysema, diabetes, or a heart condition.
It is also important to know that these plans are not required to cover everything that Affordable Care Act/ Obamacare plans cover. For example, Obamacare plans must cover certain preventive care services at 100%, including well child/baby checkups, immunizations, and mammograms.
Mayo Clinic and Medicare coverage
If you are eligible for Medicare (or will be soon), you should be aware that the Mayo Clinic is not in-network for any Medicare Advantage plans. They do accept Original Medicare and Medicare supplements (such as Plan G or Plan F). If you want to be seen at the Mayo Clinic and need help getting a Medicare supplement, contact us today.
